<![CDATA[danmckay.net]]> Fri, 01 May 2026 06:20:29 GMT Fri, 01 May 2026 06:20:29 GMT as we bolt toward 2013 I feel it maybe time for a bit of an overdue update. few recent events include a week of concerts and teaching with flautist Melissa Doecke in Alice Springs and concerts at Montsalvat and in Hamilton.

I have released two new discs this year, the first of course being duo 19's debut 'Fluid Lines' and the second Guitar Trek's 5th album 'Six Fish' on tall poppies. the latter coincides with the ensemble's 25th anniversary and features numerous premiere recordings of works by some of Australia's leading composers. and it's not bad either just quietly...

ant and I are playing a concert next month as part of Melbourne university's guitar perspectives series, come along, say g'day or even hi would do. and buy a cd! deets below.

you can probably insert your own favoured wax masterpiece - for me it might be Nigel North's Bach on the Lute set, The Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique or Reign in Blood by Slayer - but the sentiment is clear, and I love it.

I studied at the Australian National University School of Music under Timothy Kain and subsequently worked in the Guitar Department. It has a very long record of producing a consistently high level of graduate and it is incredible that it [and the entire school as we know it] is under threat. Your action is needed

ANU School of Music - As you may already know, there is a plan to declare vacant all staff positions and introduce a much smaller organisation with a new course structure that will effectively eliminate instrumental 1:1 tuition and any standards of instrumental performance.  There are a number of avenues for expressing a view if you wish.

  • The second is a rally at the ANU on Monday May 14th at 12:30pm which the students are organising. They would value support to achieve a large turnout.
  • During the consultation period, feedback and suggestions for the change-management process are welcome at somconsult@anu.edu.au.

Titled 'Fluid Lines' it features works by Australian composers Phillip Houghton and Nigel Westlake in addition to works by Terry Riley, Atanas Ourkouzounov and others. We launched it last week at a great venue down here in Melbourne - 45 downstairs - this you beaut warehouse/gallery type place. Wish you could have all attended! But then we may have had to move 'upstairs' too...it's not so huge...
